    Migration
For anyone who is following this journal who does not already know: Dreamwidth is moving to open beta later tonight (tomorrow morning, my time) and I will be migrating this whole journal to it soon after. I'm not sure what I'll do with this journal. I may delete it, or I may leave a skeleton entry redirecting people to DW.

    Never Not Hilarious
I don't think I ever mentioned Aviv Or. She's an Israeli comics artist whose work I've been intermittently aware of since we met on the CrossGen message boards years ago. Every now and then I'm moved to google her name and see what she's been up to lately. This webcomic is 4-5 years old, and I think I've seen it before. Webcomics about video games would be funnier to me if I didn't play The Sims 2 almost exclusively, so that's what the strip I linked to is about.

Edit: I found one that's hilarious even though I have no idea what game it's from.

    Whoa
So I just got home from watching the BSG finale with my brother and I can safely say that I'm... ambivalent. Contemplating fic, naturally, but not about something from the finale.

    Again with the Queerness
The subject just keeps coming up, but this time it's a good thing: Megan Rose is one of the good ones. A+ Megan, that really made me feel better. Someone cares other than me!

    Words You Cannot Use
Fuck you, Blake Lively, you do not get to use the word "tranny" like that, or at all. Stop being a hateful, transphobic, misogynistic bitch. Fuck you, Jezebel commenters, for not even bothering to call her on such a blatant slur instead of going on about "I am not a tranny!"

If there was ever a doubt: the word "tranny" is a hateful, transphobic slur and you must never, ever use it. If you use it, you are a hateful, bigoted transphobe. No exceptions.

    Happy Pesach
I can't find my old Pesach icons anywhere! Never mind. I'll probably be moving to Dreamwidth, anyway, so I'll get a chance to reorder my icon preferences. I use more icons on comments, so I barely use them at all, anymore.

Happy Pesach to all who celebrate.

    Alarm Clock
I missed my alarm clock and woke up naturally two mornings in a row. Since I tested it yesterday after waking up at nine, the only likely explanation is that I've developed the ability to turn off the alarm clock and roll over without waking up in the slightest. The alternative is that my alarm clock is possessed by a demon who hates mornings.

At any rate, today is the last workday before Pesach and I have an ass-load of work to do. I need a better alarm clock.

    Plagueview
So, with my new, clean Pleasantview, I decided to do something new. I killed off most of the playables via testing cheats and merged the remaining seven characters into one big, carefully balanced household.

Alexander Goth presented a mild difficulty, because I killed off Cassandra and Mortimer when there weren't any other adults on the lot, and so he was taken by the social worker and had to be adopted in. This means: 1) his name is now Alexander Langerak, and 2) I had to use a hack to adopt him in, because, yes, Kaylynn was pregnant from Daniel Pleasant, and of course she had twins.

I didn't have the same problem with Beau Broke, because I merged the Brokes into the Dreamer household before I killed Dirk, Brandi and Dustin. Darrin survived and immediately bonded with Beau. He currently shares a room with Lilith Pleasant, who was evicted out of the twin room when Beau moved there, to make room in the nursery for Kaylynn's babies. Other participants are Jennifer Burb and Don Lothario, so I really have one of each of the core aspirations.

Playing a household of nine Sims isn't easy. There's a reason I try to keep them down to 4-5.

    BSG!
So, season 4.5 of BSG is finally coming to Yes. When are they showing it? Daily. At midnight. Excellent timing, guys.

Oh, what the hell. At least it starts next week and I will finally see it OMG. *Dies*

In other news, I finished The Bone Doll's Twin last night and I'm going to order the rest of the series in a couple of months. I have all sorts of thoughts, which I may post about later.

    Tech Stuff
So, the computer tech just called and told me that my hard drive is fried and he has to order and install a new one.

...Dude, isn't that what I told you to do two weeks ago?

I swear, sometimes technicians behave just like doctors.

    Lost Data
I was meaning to pick up the laptop yesterday evening, but the shop was closed when I got there (after leaving work early). This morning I went there and the tech said he tried to call me and couldn't catch me -- they can't retrieve my data, he needed my okay to format the disc.

There was no writing on there, the only good side effect of the block. My simming backup was far out of date, enough that I think I'll just throw in the towel and start over. It's just a game, after all. I might do a prosperity challenge with custom skins and stuff. I don't know. Anyway, I'll be picking up the computer tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I've been reading Morality for Beautiful Girls. I'm about halfway through, and I love it.

    Computer Woes
I have probably permanently damaged my laptop's hard drive. So, well done me. The thing freaked out at me last night about a corrupted hal.dll file. I called my brother to google for me and surmised that booting WXP from disc would solve the problem, and so resolved to contact IBM support and pick up my long-languishing WXP discs (which did not come with the laptop itself).

This morning at work I did some more background reading and surmised quite differently: the physical disc is almost certainly damaged, chances are it will have to be replaced, I don't know how long it will take or how much it will cost, and it seems likely that the data is mostly unrecoverable. My backups, of course, are not up to date. Best of all, the whole thing is my fault for being too careless with the machine, forgetting momentarily that such beings are very delicate and sensitive.

...Who names a boot file hal.dll? Are you trying to make me paranoid?

    Weather and Comics
It is warm. After being so cold only a couple of weeks ago, now I'm sitting at home with my windows open and it's maybe 23 degrees out. Yesterday I went out with short sleeves. I still carried my coat over my arm, because I knew I'd be coming home at night and it would probably be cold again. Then again, it's supposed to drizzle tomorrow.

My brother and I are cleansing some comics we were disappointed by. After about ten second chances, we're finally dropping New Avengers, and Madame Xanadu is also going. I really like the art and the magic, but the plot is plodding and the whole thing seems to be more about the Phantom Stranger than the title character. Supergirl might go, too, what with the New Krypton thing and everything.

Instead, we're getting The Unwritten, Ex Machina (probably starting with the next story arc) and probably Captain Britain and MI:13. My brother is at an advantage, because he knows some of the characters. I'm only going based on the fact that people like it who like the same things I like.

    Writing Venues: Verb Noire
Verb Noire, still totally skeletal and waiting to coalesce. Nonetheless, I want to link to it now and follow up and where it's heading.

There is also Transcriptase, which the bio-geek in me rejoices over the name, and the lit-geek wonders why I haven't read their entire archive yet. Last night I also made a book order from Amazon to try a bunch of new stuff. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is not yet out in paperback, so it will have to wait.

I also may be writing a script for a werewolf movie. This should help me develop my plotting and pacing skills.

    Mmm, Pop Culture
So, yesterday was Tuesday, AKA family visit day, AKA pop culture immersion day. I got an early start because I had to leave work early for a doctor's appointment. I watched the last three episodes of season 3 of BSG, as well as episode 8 of True Blood. I also read about half of this month's comics, and some of the rest today.

Rewatching the first few eps of BSG I ever saw (in their entirety) made a lot more sense in context, naturally. I still feel as though !!! )

Comics! I haven't read BtVS (the Harmony issue) or Madame Xanadu yet. For length more than spoilers. )
