Newspaper Rock comments on the fact that when several Quileute youth are invited to take part of the opening night of New Moon- most of the stars and people are shocked to find out it's not a made-up tribe: Comment: Let's think about this a minute. Millions of people have read the Twilight books and seen the Twilight movie. The media has written tens of thousands of articles on the Twilight phenomenon. Yet after all that scrutiny, half the media don't realize there's a real Quileute tribe?! This is what happens when you turn real Indians into fictional warriors, shamans, and werewolves. You place them in some alternate reality of mystery and magic where they never fought European invaders, signed peace treaties, or established modern governments. By equating Indians with ferocious beast-men, you deny that they have the accouterments of a civilized people: history, culture, language, religion, philosophy, and art. Part 2 The other day, I ended up re-watching The Debut, and being the geek that I am, looked up what Wikipedia had to say: Right after Gene finished shooting the first 10 mins of his thesis project, he sent the movie script to potential financial backers and was turned down. Gene and John went around Hollywood, "shopping" the idea of The Debut to all the major Hollywood studios(Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, Universal). Most of the studio executives didn't know what a Filipino/Filipino American was and told him the film needed a white actor in a lead so the film can be marketable. Um. Living in California (or anywhere on the West Coast) and you don't even know WHAT a filipino IS? Seriously? Also: The most difficult role to cast was finding the love interest of Ben. Most of the females that auditioned were, light skinned Filipinas or Half Filipino/European females or as Gene puts it, "Miss Saigon Girls." Actress Joy Bisco was chosen after she heard at a club they were looking for dark skin Filipino American actresses. Colorism, roles for darker women, etc. Guh. So, Hollywood. Take a power structure of people who are willfully ignorant and unwilling to deal with people as people, as well as making concentrated efforts to keep us from having access to venues to tell our stories. The argument "it's only fiction" really can only apply if you have context to understand the difference between fiction and reality. And, it's also interesting that we're not allowed to tell EITHER our fictions OR our realities, but that others get the right to do that for us, and seem amazed as if we stepped out of a comic book or something when we demand the right to tell our stories. And it's always interesting how one group profits in reality for making fantasy about another and that group is never us. |

| dbrw_feed | 8:26p | wga report So given the 'boohoo its so hard to be a white guy in this industry we continue to dominate' in progress from the heroes crew, a supporting orc (aka pam) sent on word that the latest writer's guild of america report is out re: hiring of women, poc, and older writers. (no one could be all three? ok i'll stop now, but). The 2009 Hollywood Writers Report is the sixth in a series of reports released by the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) examining employment and earnings trends for writers in the Hollywood industry. These reports have highlighted three groups of writers -- women, minorities, and older writers – who traditionally have been underemployed in the industry. The reports have documented the employment experiences of these study groups relative to their male, white, and younger counterparts in order to identify any patterns that suggest either progress or retreat on the industry diversity front. Using the reports as a diagnostic tool, the WGAW seeks to collaborate with the industry in efforts to increase the employment opportunities of all writers. eta: valsadie had also noted this in comments to the OP. |

I've barely glanced at it since I've never even watched the show myself, but it looks like there's a ton of classic "LET ME TELL YOU INTERNETS, IT IS HARD BEING A WHITE MALE IN HOLLYWOOD!" foolishness being flung about. |

10:15p | Here are two story/art challenge communities for any of you who like to do such things. First one is story_arcEveryone has seen the various prompt communities. This one is for the writing/drawing of story arcs, or a multi-chaptered fic/picture series. Using the prompts, you work all of them into a single universe, as series of stories or artwork that relate to each other. Or, alternatively, into a single story, each prompt being used for a single chapter. To some, that'll be easy. To others, it's a lot more challenging. You get a pick of prompts, and we welcome claims of all types. Pairings, threesomes/moresomes, single people, over all fandoms. Collaborations are welcomed, though we request that both parties join the com. The second is mix_n_makeEveryone has that song that reminds them of a person, a fandom, a story or art idea just waiting to come forth. Well, here at Mix n Make, we not only share that feeling, we encourage you to make the image in your brain a reality. The goal: Make a playlist and write/draw what each song inspires of you. They can be as short as three songs, or as long as you want to make them. Not only can you share your favorite songs, but you can get those bunnies out of your brains and shared with the rest of us. Come join us, we take all fandoms and original works. |
